Mamou A gifted raconteur and joketeller, adoring husband, father and grandfather, and a longtime former assistant district attorney, Bruce Rozas, 68, died on Sunday, March 3, of cancer, with many of his family at his side.
Mr. Rozas was born in Chataignier, La., the second son of a rice farmer, and graduated from Chataignier High School, earned a B.A. in history from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and a juris doctor from Louisiana State University. He married Laura Dupre, also of Chataignier, in 1966, and after he served as a law clerk in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, the couple settled in Mamou, where he practiced civil and criminal law. Mr. Rozas was an assistant district attorney for Evangeline Parish for 24 years, served as a judge protem in the 13th Judicial District Court, and as magistrate judge for the town of Mamou. He was also admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Rozas was a lover of many hobbies, including amateur meteorology, classic cars and motorcycles, Civil War history and reenacting, computer gadgetry, model airplanes and woodworking, and crosscountry travel with his family. He was spiritual, a believer, a cocaptain of Our Lady of Grand Coteau retreat, a marriage preparation counselor, a catechism teacher, a professor at the Cursillo Center in Prairie Ronde, and Eucharistic minister for the homebound. Mr. Rozas never shied from being the center of attention, especially when telling jokes. He was known for his generosity and service in Rotary, the Boy Scouts, as a volunteer firefighter and a baseball coach. He was happiest and proudest when surrounded by his family and friends.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his brother, Wilbur Rozas and his wife Pamela of Chataignier three sons, Barry Rozas and his wife Linda of Lafayette Greg Rozas and his wife Sharon of Baton Rouge David Rozas of Baton Rouge and his four daughters, Kristi Johnson and her husband Jay of Ville Platte Denise Bertrand and her husband Chris of Mamou Michelle Jensen and her husband Thor of South Korea and Angela Rozas of Chicago and 17 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aliday and Lydie Rozas.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 6, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ardoin Funeral Home, 717 6th Street, in Mamou, with a rosary to be said at 6:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be said Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Anns Catholic Church, 716 6th Street, in Mamou, with a viewing at the funeral home beginning at 8 a.m.
Mr. Rozas favorite charities were St. Anns Catholic Church and Miles Peret Cancer Services, 2130 Kaliste Saloon Road, Suite 200, Lafayette, LA 70508.
