Anita Soileau Fontenot, age 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 28, 2017, at Savoy Care Center in Mamou.
She was born January 8, 1932, in a farm house just outside of Mamou in Pointe Aux Pins, to Lee and Beatrice Soileau. She was the second of three daughters. After graduating from Mamou High School she married Rodney Fontenot on September 26, 1948, and together they had three children.
Anita was well known in Mamou due to her many years of working as town clerk at Mamou City Hall and as a bank teller at Guaranty Bank of Mamou. As a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church she was an avid volunteer who participated in many of the church's volunteer activities, and was a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a volunteer at Savoy Medical Center and the Savoy Cancer Center.
Her hobbies included traveling, reading, crocheting, ceramics, entertaining, and cooking. No one could make a better crawfish bisque than Anita. In fact, her bisque recipe won first place in a culinary contest sponsored by Brennan's of New Orleans. Also, both she and her husband, Rodney, were well known for their gracious hospitality.
Anita is survived by two of her children, Aaron Fontenot and wife, Mona, of Dallas, TX, Carla Verges and husband, Creighton, of Baton Rouge, and one sister, Sybiline Aucoin and husband, L.D., of Houston, TX. She was blessed with six grandchildren - Ian Fontenot and wife, Jessica, Mia and Claire Fontenot, Cade Verges and wife, Lizzy, Cary Verges and wife, Amy, Caylin Verges, and five great-grandchildren. She is survived by five nieces and one nephew - Monica Aucoin Harmon, Bridget Aucoin McAdam, Lorina Shuff LeTour, Yvette Vanderhider Heiser, Lynette Vanderhider Ledoux, and Phil Vanderhider Jr. She is also survived by her dear friends in Honfleur, France, Jacqueline and Bruno Alexandre.
Anita was preceded in death by her infant daughter Judalane, her husband of 62 years, Rodney, her sister, Mercedine Shuff, and her niece, Yvette Aucoin.
Visitation will be held at Ardoin's Funeral Home in Mamou on Saturday, May 6, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 pm services. The time for the reciting of the Rosary will be 11:00 am. Family and friends may view the online obituary and sign the guestbook at www.ardoinfuneralhomes.com.
