Mamou- A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Sunday, June 29, 2008 at 2:00 pm at St. Anns Catholic Church in Mamou for Burnel Young, 86, who passed away, Thursday, June 26, 2008 at Savoy Medical Center in Mamou, La. Rite of Committal will follow in the New St. Anns Cemetery with Father Bob Courville Celebrant.
Mr. Young was raised on a farm outside Mamou. He later studed agriculture at th University of Louisiana at Lafayette, then called Southwestern Louisiana InstituteSLI. His studies were interrupted by his service in World War II as a gunner in the European Theater. Mr. Young flew 30 missions over germany.
On returning from the war, Mr. Young completed his college studies and married. He and his wife, Sylvia, were married 63 years, and raised three daughters, and a son. They owned and operated Youngs Grocery Store where Mr. Young had continued to work until he became ill.
He was a hard working man who loved vegetable gardening. His service to his country in the Great War was a point of great pride to him. He had recently taken an Honor Air Charter Flight with other veterans to see the World War II Monument in Washington, D.C. and had returned with a renewed sense of the contribution he had made to his country and the world.
Mr. Young died peacefully with his wife by his side.
He is survivedby his wife, of 63 years, Silvia Tubre Young, of Mamou, La; one son Bill Young and wife, Erica, of Lafayette, La; three daughters, Deedy Hays and husband, Bill of Lafayette, La, Babs Kearney and husband, Tom, of Covington, La, and Suzy Rogers, and husband, Dave, of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren ,Beth Provosty and husband, Josh, Kelsey Bryant and husband, Don, Courtney Kearney, Avery Young, Sydney Young, and Lily Hays; two great grandchildren, Ian Provosty, and Gavin Bryant;
The family request that visitation be observed at Ardoins Funeral Home in Mamou on Saturday, June 28, 2008 from10:00 am until 9:00 pm and again on Sunday, June 29, 2008 from 8:00 am until time of services. Father Bob Courville will recite a rosary at 6:00 pm Saturday evening.
