MAMOU – Funeral services will be held at a 2:00 PM, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Mamou on Monday, June 22, 2020 for Floretta “Flo” DesHotels, 82, who passed away on Friday, June 19, 2020 in Mamou, Louisiana. Father Billy Massie will be celebrant of the Mass and will conduct funeral services. Burial will take place in the new St. Ann’s Cemetery.
Floretta “Flo” DesHotels was born on November 16, 1937 to Edward and Virginia Fontenot Fuselier. Flo was a lifelong resident of Mamou and was a devout Catholic. She attended daily mass, brought communion to hospital patients, taught catechism, volunteered over fifteen years at the Cursillo Center in Prairie Ronde, and served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. A religious pilgrimage to Israel was among her favorite traveling adventures. Flo’s faith was strong and she raised her family to believe in God’s love.
Flo also strongly believed in the value of education. She graduated from Mamou High School in 1955 and received her Bachelor of Science from Southwestern Louisiana University (currently ULL) in 1958. She furthered her education with a Masters’ Degree in 1971 from LSU and a 30 plus, also from LSU. Flo dedicated over 30 years of her life instilling the value of education in her students as an algebra and physical education teacher, where she was also sponsor of the cheer squad, basketball team, volleyball team, and BETA sponsor. She enjoyed and took pride in molding and shaping the lives of many of our leaders today. She spent a good deal of her time in community endeavors, as evidenced by the reward bestowed upon her by the Mamou Rotary Club, 1976 Woman of the Year.
Flo was very active and enjoyed traveling the world with her sister-in-law, Belle. She also enjoyed making ceramics, knitting, exercising and working in her flowerbeds. Flo’s greatest joy, though, was that of spending time with and caring for her family. She was known as “Momee” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an amazing mentor, role model and example of integrity to many; a true class act. Her family and friends will miss her dearly, but rejoice in knowing she is celebrated in heaven.
Flo is survived by her son, Kyle DesHotels and wife, Leslie; daughter-in-law, Connie DesHotels; her grandchildren, Kristi King and husband Bubba, Kasey Church and husband Cody, Shea DesHotels and wife Ginger, Desi Buller and husband, Alex. Her nine great-grandchildren include: Sydia King, Nixxon Church, Vara King, Veyda Church, Iyla DesHotels, Briggs King, Beau DesHotels, Rhett Buller, and Drew Buller.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Virginia Fuselier; husband, Millard DesHotels, Jr.; son, Blaine DesHotels; and sister Cassie Fuselier Goudeau.
At the request of the family, visitation will be observed at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Mamou on Monday, June 22 from 9:00 AM until time of service at 2PM. A rosary will be recited on Monday at 10:00 AM.
