James W. “Jimmy” Deshotel was born on Monday, July 28, 1947, in Lafayette, Louisiana and passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 25, 2024 at the age of 77, surrounded by his loved ones. He was a devoted family man, a disciplined and hard-working individual who embodied determination and love in all his pursuits. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Mamou. Burial will follow in the New St. Ann Cemetery with Father Billy Massie officiating services.

Jimmy was a proud veteran of the United States Army having served on the combat frontline during the Vietnam War, a role that showcased his strong work ethic, determination, and commitment to excellence. Jimmy was a good provider for his family often working long hours as a driller in the oilfield industry. When not working he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and gardening. James had a remarkable ability to make anything grow in his garden, where he often harvested fresh vegetables to create homemade pickles. He is known for his love for cooking, particularly his signature dish of spotted catfish courtbouillon. Those who had the pleasure of tasting his cooking would agree, he was a master in the kitchen, expertly shaking that pot to ensure his catfish was cooked to perfection. Jimmy loved making his own homemade sausage and tasso which he used in his favorite meal, okra gumbo.

Jimmy was immensely proud of the gatherings he had with his children and grandchildren, relishing the time spent with his family. He is survived by a loving family including his three children, Vickie Deshotel, Kevin Deshotel (Kristie), and Steven Deshotel and his five grandchildren, Macy Montelaro (Kip), Ashley Broussard (Bernard), Natalie Balfa (Chase), Kourtnie Roberie (John Mitchell), and Tobie Deshotel. He also leaves behind seven great grandchildren, Lakelynn, Vanna Faye, Ivan Luke, Zane, Knox, Adlee, and Gemma and one sister, Loretta Baker, who will forever hold his memory dear.

Preceding Jimmy in death are his wife, Glenda Faye Fournerat; parents, Felca and Pauline Ortego Deshotel; brother, John Herbert Deshotel, and sister, Mildred Blanchard.
