MAMOU-It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of John Burkeman Young, Sr. announces his passing on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at the age of 84. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church on Thursday, March 2, 2017. Father Thainese will officiate the service. Burial will follow in the New St. Ann's Cemetery.
Burke was named The 1971 Man of Year for his outstanding generosity and his dedication to various organizations in the Mamou area. A few of the organizations he dedicated his time to were VFW, Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Woodman of the World. At one time he was an active Volunteer Fireman, as well as, the President of Rotary Club and he served on the Board of Directors with Guaranty Bank for many years. Burke served his country honorably for four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He loved hunting, fishing and camping and he took great pride in his farm. Burke was an avid LSU and Saints fan and he enjoyed listening to Cajun music and visiting with his friends.
A wonderful husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, Burke will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 62 years, Beatrice Heinen Young; son, John Burkeman Young, Jr.; daughters, Elizabeth Young Faul and husband Bruce and Angela Young Ramey and husband Bill; brother, Clayton Young; grandchildren, Amber Faul Vidrine and Elizabeth Ramey; and great-grandchild, Bryce Vidrine.
Burke will now reunite in Heaven with his parents, Clifton and Gertie Young; and sisters, Eura Mae Savant, Laura Jane Young Bondick and Maxie West. They surely await his arrival with open arms and joyous hearts.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Ardoin's Funeral Home of Mamou on Thursday, March 2, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. until time of service. A Rosary will be prayed at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday morning by Deacon Roderick Perron.
