MAMOU-Margretta “Greta” Ann Fuselier Fontenot passed away at her home in Mamou on November 9, 2021, after a seventeen-year fight with Parkinson’s Disease. While her time with us ended too soon, those who knew her will treasure the imprint she left on their heart through her faith in Christ, kind spirit and sense of humor. She was also notoriously frugal (so I need to keep this obituary concise), obsessed with hosing her driveway, and a huge fan of cleaning everything with bleach long before the pandemic. Greta’s presence will be greatly missed, but the family takes consolation in the knowledge that she is no longer in pain and burdened by the physical limitations of Parkinson’s.
Greta was born on August 3, 1946, in Mamou to Johnnie & Jeanette Fuselier, both of Mamou. She married Joseph “Jake” Fontenot on June 22, 1963, who predeceased her on May 28, 2007. She was also preceded in death by an infant sister and daughter-in-law, Shannon Trahan Fontenot. She is survived by her two children, Chris and Jamie Fontenot, two granddaughters who she absolutely adored and lit up at the mention of their names, Leah Brooke Fontenot Lafleur (Lane Lafleur), and Laura Beth Fontenot, as well as two great grandchildren, Adeline and Aiden Lafleur, and three brothers, Johnny, Eddie and Chuck Fuselier.
Greta was an ardent Catholic and practiced the faith with zeal and conviction. For the many years her health allowed, she participated in St. Ann’s adoration chapel, as well as the volunteer group, Martha’s Helpers, who provided food for families who had lost loved ones. Outside of her family, Greta’s passion was to travel. She had made trips to Europe, Canada, the Caribbean and Holy Land, as well as throughout the United States. She was also an avid reader for her entire life. She was on a first name basis with the librarians in Mamou, and they were always extremely helpful in accommodating her varied requests; she considered them to be friends.
The family would also like to recognize and extend sincere appreciation to her long-term caregivers, Sandra Goodley, Michelle Whittington and Joan Fuselier.
Visitation will be Friday, November 12 from 5-8 pm, and again Saturday morning from 8 until the 10:00 mass at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Mamou. Interment at the New St. Ann’s Mausoleum. Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Mamou is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation (www.michaeljfox.org) or Donation Processing, The Michael J. Fox Foundation, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014.
