MAMOU -- It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Mary Nell Fontenot’s passing on October 29, 2023, in her cherished home in Mamou, Louisiana. Born in Forest Hill, Louisiana on November 9, 1941, Mary led a remarkable life filled with love, adventure, and warmth.
A woman of many passions, Mary found solace and joy in the world of literature. She voraciously devoured every book in the local library, immersing herself in captivating stories and timeless tales. Her thirst for knowledge was insatiable, and through her passion for reading, she emerged as an erudite and well-rounded individual.
In her younger years, Mary dedicated her time to serving the community, working for the Evangeline Parish School Board in their French immersion program. Her commitment to fostering education allowed countless students to embrace linguistic diversity and cultural understanding.
Despite her admiration for literature and education, Mary's true talent lay in the kitchen. With a spirit of culinary adventure, she fearlessly experimented with flavors and techniques. Her delicious creations were a testament to her creativity and her ability to infuse love and warmth into every meal. Whether it was a treasured family recipe or an innovative invention, Mary's culinary skills were simply unparalleled.
Mary's spirit of exploration extended beyond the kitchen walls. Together with her beloved husband, she embarked on countless journeys, traversing the globe and absorbing the beauty and richness of each destination. Despite the allure of far-off lands, Mary's heart always yearned for her home in Mamou. It was here that she found solace, where her flower garden bloomed in brilliance, reflecting her own vibrant spirit.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving children, Jaen Fontenot and wife Penny of Eunice, Dr John Fontenot of Mamou, Penny McDaniel and husband Steve of Ville Platte, Torry Fontenot of Tate Cove, Rachel Manuel and husband Scott of Mamou; grandchildren, Shae McDaniel, Chandos McDaniel, Kelsey Deshotels, Gannon Deshotels, Jaenne Brad Fontenot, Jobi Fontenot, Autumn Fontenot, Quade Fontenot, Kristian Fontenot, Gage Fontenot; great grandchildren, Kerrington, Rayna, Beau, Ivy, Byrdie, Holden, Blakelee, Jacoby and brothers, Daniel Vidrine and Bob Vidrine.
Preceded in death by her husband, John A. Fontenot; sisters, Ferna Lou Guillory and Suzette Haymon and mother, Agnes Hargroder Vidrine of Mamou, La.
We invite you to join us as we pay tribute to Mary's remarkable life. Visitation will take place on November 2, 2023, at Ardoin’s Funeral Home of Mamou starting at 12:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Visitation will resume on November 3, 2023, at 8:00 AM until 10:30 AM offering an opportunity for loved ones to bid a final farewell. A Rosary will be prayed Thursday evening, November 2, 2023. A Mass of Christin Burial will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church on November 3, 2023, at 11:00 AM to celebrate Mary's life and offer prayers for her eternal peace. Following the Mass, a graveside service will be held at New St. Ann's Cemetery.
