MAMOU-Funeral Services will be held at 4:00 PM at Ardoin’s Funeral Home of Mamou on Friday, June 7, 2019, for Robert Duane Matthews, Jr., 64, who passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 in Alexandria, LA.
Brother Kevin West, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Ville Platte, will conduct the funeral service.
Robert Duane Matthews, Jr was born in Tacoma Parks, MD on August 26, 1954 to his parents Robert and Joy Matthews. He proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era. Robert was a dedicated firefighter, through his dedication he obtained the rank of Captain of the Awendaw Fire Department. He served the community and his department until his retirement. Robert was a baseball enthusiast; his favorite teams were the New York Yankees and Clemson Tigers. He watched every game and attended at least one game a season. He would not allow anyone to talk bad about his Yankees. Robert was non-pretentious, it did not matter to him what you had or who you were. He was a friend to everyone. Robert was very strong in his faith and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Ville Platte.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Fusilier of Mamou; sister, Karen Kadra of Moncks Corner, SC; his faithful companion, Baron; his beloved cats, Beau, Sissy, Tator, Skillet, and Izzy; nieces, Melissa and husband Gary King of Mount Pleasant, SC, Jessica Kadra of Summerville, SC, Christina Matthews of Conway, SC, Laura Matthews of Conway, SC, Roxie Cramer of Chatanooga, TN, and Jessica Pittman of Farmerville, LA; newphews, Michael Turner of Mount Pleasant, SC, Christopher Matthews of Mount Pleasant, SC, Damian Fuselier of Iowa, La, Travis Cramer of Chatanooga, TN, and Eric Fusilier of Eunice, LA; and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Joy Matthews; brother, Gregory Allen Matthews; and his dog, Heidi.
The family requests that visitation be observed at Ardoin’s Funeral Home of Mamou on Friday, June 7, 2019 from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM. As requested by the Matthews family, everyone in attendance should wear their favorite team’s jersey or shirt. Robert was never one to dress up, and he wanted everyone to be comfortable at his service.
